In this short clip from Pastor Burnell's message he addresses the issue of uncontrolled desire, which leads to discontentment, greed, and covetousness. It highlights how comparing ourselves to others can fuel these negative emotions, as mentioned in 2 Corinthians 10:12. The message encourages us to recognize the dangers of such comparisons and to seek contentment in our own lives by adhering to ethical and spiritual boundaries.
What is Uncontrolled Desire?
Uncontrolled desire occurs when we are willing to break ethical and spiritual boundaries to obtain what we want. This type of desire is often driven by greed and covetousness. It leads us away from contentment and into a state of constant dissatisfaction.
The Role of Comparison
One of the primary ways people become discontent is through comparison. In 2 Corinthians 10:12, it is written, "We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise." This verse highlights the folly of comparing ourselves to others, as it leads to discontentment and a lack of wisdom.
The Dangers of Covetousness
Covetousness is a strong desire for what others have, whether it be possessions, status, or relationships. This desire can consume us, leading to unethical behavior and spiritual decay. It is essential to recognize and address covetousness in our lives to maintain spiritual health and ethical integrity.
