Understanding the Riches of Christ: A Journey Through Ephesians 1
Introduction
This week, we embarked on a new journey through the book of Ephesians, focusing on the first chapter. The sermon highlights the importance of understanding the context of Scripture and the profound truths embedded within. Ephesians, written by the Apostle Paul, offers a deep dive into the spiritual blessings and the transformative power of the Gospel. THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF EPHESUS
What Was Ephesus Like?
Ephesus was a significant city in western Turkey, known for its large population and the Temple of Artemis, a major attraction of the time. The city was a hub of commerce and religion, drawing people from various backgrounds, including Jews and Gentiles.
Paul's Missionary Journey
In Acts 19, Paul visited Ephesus and encountered believers who had not yet received the Holy Spirit. After teaching them about Christ, they were baptized in Jesus' name, and the Holy Spirit came upon them. Paul stayed in Ephesus for about three years, preaching and performing miracles, leading to many conversions and significant societal changes.
The Structure of Ephesians

Believers are not just forgiven; they are adopted into God's family. This adoption signifies a special relationship with God, where we are highly favored and loved.
Accepted in the Beloved
Being accepted in Christ means we are highly favored and cherished by God. This acceptance is not based on our performance but on Christ's finished work.
THE BLESSINGS OF THE SON
Redemption Through His Blood
Redemption means being bought back from sin and destruction. Through Christ's sacrifice, believers are redeemed and forgiven, their debts paid in full.
An Inheritance in Christ
Believers have obtained an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and eternal. This inheritance includes eternal life, the kingdom of God, and reigning with Christ.
THE BLESSINGS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Sealed with the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is a mark of authenticity and ownership, signifying that believers belong to God. This seal also serves as a guarantee of our future inheritance.
The Holy Spirit as a Guarantee
The Holy Spirit is a down payment of what is to come, assuring believers of their eternal inheritance and the fullness of God's promises.
PAUL'S PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH
Eyes of Understanding Enlightened
Paul prays that believers' eyes would be opened to understand the hope of their calling and the riches of their inheritance in Christ. This spiritual enlightenment is crucial for living out the Gospel.
The Exceeding Greatness of His Power
Paul emphasizes the resurrection power of Christ, which is available to believers. This power enables us to overcome challenges and live victoriously.
LIFE APPLICATION
Living in the Light of Our Inheritance
Understanding our identity and inheritance in Christ should transform how we live. We are not beggars but children of the King, with access to His riches and blessings.
Cultivating a Relationship with the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is essential for our daily walk with God. Cultivating a relationship with Him involves seeking His guidance, listening to His conviction, and relying on His power.
Representing Christ on Earth
As believers, we represent Christ on earth. Our lives should reflect His love, grace, and power, drawing others to Him.
